Tomorrow’s Vote on the Proposed University of Massachusetts Dartmouth School of Law – room change

The Board of Higher Education (BHE) will meet to vote on the proposed University of Massachusetts Dartmouth School of Law TOMORROW, Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Bridgewater State College, Campus Center, Large Ballroom, located on Grove Street in  Bridgewater.

New and exciting things happening at the law school:

  1. upcoming events;
  2. new Alumni Association “small time commitment/big impact” mentoring opportunities;
  3. assistance for alumni seeking to practice out-of-state;

  5. SNESL Roundtable Symposium Law Journal submissions and subscriptions.

1. Upcoming Events

  1. January 23rd: Boston Bar Association New Lawyer’s Section is hosting a FREE wine tasting event for area law school alumni.   The event is on Friday, January 23rd from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Boston Bar Association located at 16 Beacon Street in Boston.  The event will also include networking opportunities.  RSVP online at https://www.bostonbar.org/ebusiness/default.aspx; for questions contact 617-778-1982 or afrank@bostonbar.org.
  2. January 28th: Delta Theta Phi international law fraternity is hosting a FREE celebration for Judge Larkin’s Birthday at the law school for the alumni, students, faculty and administration.  The event is on Wednesday, January 28th from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Cafeteria on the lower level of the school.  RSVP to delta@snesl.edu.  The celebration will feature catered food, bartender service, and of course birthday cake!
  3. February 12th: Massachusetts Bar Association Young (meaning “New”) Lawyers Division is hosting a FREE “Starting Out: Issues for New Lawyers” seminar and social networking event at the law school for alumni and students.  The event is on Thursday, February 12th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Larkin Courtroom and will feature panelists, including some SNESL alumni, discussing issues of concern for lawyers starting out in the practice of law.
  4. February 13th: ABA Women Rainmakers is hosting a FREE seminar “Linking Public Service and Business Development”.  The event is on Friday, February 13th from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Boston Marriott Copley Place located at 110 Huntington Avenue in Boston.  The speakers at event will include Attorney General Martha Coakley as well as partners at area law firms and a former Superior Court Justice.

b.  Guest Speaking at a SNESL Class about your Area of Expertise (provide your area of expertise)

c.   3L Job Shadow Program to Attend a Hearing, Deposition, etc. with you (provide your location and practice description)

d.   Recent Graduate Mentor Program to Provide On-Going Guidance (provide your location and practice description)

e.   Conducting SNESL Student Mock Interviews

f.    Providing Bar Exam Advice and Encouragement for First and/or Multiple-Time Test Takers (provide the state of the exam for which you sat)

ABOUT THE SPECIFIC PROGRAM IN WHICH YOU WOULD LIKE TO PARTICIPATE*

3. Assistance for alumni living and seeking to practice out-of-state

a.    Reciprocity Requests: Out-of-state alumni may be able to receive assistance with their job searches from the law schools in their local areas by making a “Reciprocity Request” through the SNESL Career Services Office.  Granting of such requests are at the sole discretion of each law school, and some ABA law schools only grant requests to fellow ABA law schools.  Reciprocity typically involves access to job listings and other printed materials, and may be limited in duration to only a few months.

b.    LLM Programs: Have you or a classmate graduated from an LLM program?  If so I’d love to know!  I am in the process of compiling information about various programs to share with current students as well as graduates who are interested in furthering their legal education, and would like to be able to put them in touch with SNESL alumni who have already been through the programs in which they are interested.  If you graduated from an LLM program outside of Massachusetts please indicate if you were allowed you to sit for that state’s bar exam upon graduation.

4. A Career Networking Opportunity

Alumni Charles Koltz, Jr. ’95, who is also a registered nurse, is making himself available to discuss medical malpractice issues gratis with fellow SNESL alumni.  Charles often serves as an expert witness in these matters and can to talk to you about potential claims and cases.  He can be reached by telephone at (508) 982-6003 and by email at lawyernurse@earthlink.net.

5. SNESL Roundtable Symposium Law Journal Submissions and Subscriptions

The 2008 Roundtable Symposium Law Journal highlights trends and issues in intellectual property and will be published in hardcopy and electronically on the Roundtable’s website.   The topic for the 2009 Journal is “Trends and Issues in Bankruptcy Law” and the deadline for submissions is June 15, 2009; the topic for the 2010 Journal is “Trends and Issues in Terrorism and the Law” and the deadline for submissions is June 15, 2010.  If you would like to submit a paper for possible publication, please email your submission to roundtable@snesl.edu.  Also, subscriptions to the Journal are available at a special discounted rate for members of the SNESL community.  Further information about submissions and subscriptions can be found on the Journal’s website at http://www.snesl.edu/maincontent.aspx?p=288&t=56 or by emailing the 2008 Editor-in-Chief Chris Davis at cdavis@snesl.edu.
